ENGLISH LEICESTER SHEEP

English Leicesters are large framed sheep, noted for their wide level topline, strong constitution and good temperament. The English Leicester is one of the oldest pure breeds of sheep, and was one of the first breeds to be imported into Australia. A dual purpose sheep, they were ideal for early Australia as they produced a meaty carcase and a heavy fleece. They had a huge influence on the Merino sheep, and were used to increase the length of staple and the lustre of merino wool. The English Leicester was also used to breed larger bodied merinos,
as the merinos first imported into Australia were much smaller than the current day version.

The English Leicester was the foundation of many present day long wool sheep breeds. The most common breed being the Border Leicester, which was developed from crossing the English Leiceser with the Cheviot.
The English Leicester Ram is ideal for crossing with fine wool ewes to produce prime lamb mothers.
They have a lambing average of 150%.
They are a placid sheep, and are
excellent mothers.

The fleece is similar to mohair, and is in high demand for handspinners and weavers.
The English Leicester is listed on the Heritage breeds in Australia for it's contribution to the foundation of the sheep and wool industry in Australia.

| Moseley Park is currently the only registered English Leicester Stud in South Australia.
We have been interested in these sheep for a number of years, and in January 2008, finally travelled to Victoria to buy our first stud sheep.
After many phone conversations with Mrs Ethel Stephenson, we visited her English Leicester Stud(Ostler's Hill) and selected 2 Stud rams,(Harvey-2yrs, and Rupert-8months). We also chose 7 ewes. We are planning to run Harvey with our Merino ewes as well as the English Leicester ewes. Rupert is currently on holiday with his friend Robert! He will be ready for next year!!!
