Moseley Park Sheep

At Moseley Park we have traditionally run commercial white Merino sheep, selling the wool after shearing, and breeding X-bred lambs for the meat market. Last year we sold most of these(due to the drought) and started running a mixed flock for Handspinning fleeces. We currently have approximately 35 ewes, of mixed breeds, mainly Merino, Romney X and English Leicester X, black and white, and have them running with an English Leicester Ram(Harvey).
We also have approximately 13 wethers for fleece as well. We have 2 Alpaca guards that run with the sheep all the time.

All our sheep, (except Harvey) wear rugs for the whole year to protect their fleece from dust, vegetable matter, and weathering on the ends. This provides a beautifully clean fleece, even the shearer is impressed!!!! The rugs do require a bit more maintenance, but it is worth it at the end of the year! The rugs keep the sheep a bit cooler in the Summer as the white rug helps to reflect the sunlight. The rugs also help to keep the sheep warmer in the colder weather, as they help to keep the wind and rain out. We always have a lot of dust in the wool, unfortunately that`s part of life out here!! and the rugs have been extremely good in keeping the dust off the fleece. Which of course makes for a beautiful spinning fleece.

This year all our lambs will be either full English Leicester, or a X of the EL, thanks to the services of Harvey!!! I am keen to breed some English Leicester X Merino's for the fleeces, which I think will be just excellent for spinning!!!! So have kept 14 white merino ewes for that purpose.

Our sheep are run in 300acre paddocks after Harvest, from December through till May, when they come into a smaller paddock near the house where we handfeed them hay and a grain mix feed. The ewes are run separate from the wethers and rams, so that they have better feed whilst in lamb and after lambing. All our sheep are very quiet, and come running at the sight of a bucket, so are easy to manage. Lambing is in late July, and August. With the merinos lambing a little earlier.

I do buy in a variety of fleeces from selected breeders, with great fleeces. Which means that I am able to supply lots of different types of fleece without keeping so many different breeds of sheep on the property. You can see in the photos, the difference between the uncoated fleece and the coated fleece. This is 6 months wool, on a merino sheep.
